This is the perfect forum for me to ask all the questions I've always wanted to ask about Everton. I was just wondering about Lineker. Was anyone gutted when he left after only a season? Should we of kept him? Was 2 million, even then, to small a fee to accept? I remember watching a video of him playing against Luton and being about two or three yards behind the defence and latching onto a long ball he had no right to get and scoring. 40 goals is a lot and I'm surprised anyone would sell a player that can get you that many.

I loved when he played for us, but I think it was fairly obvious he was using us as a stop gap and while on the one hand I dont blame him for wanting to better himself, I think it was a bit snide the way it was done. I dont think the club could have done much to keep him here to be honest.

Oh really. I thought he wanted to stay as we were champions and had a great team. I thought we could compete with Barca in those days (in terms of trophies) so going to Spain wasn't a big deal. Do you think it was playing in Europe that might of swayed him?

I was always under the impression and belief he wanted to stay and that it was Pip Carter who wanted to cash in on him. Doubling the fee we paid seemed a sound busines decision, and in them glorious days we all trusted Kendalls decisions and thought he had sanctioned the transfer. Seems different now, even in recent games me and my mates will turn to each other after another hoofed ball over the top of the opponents defence, and as it runs into the keeper's hands we'll say 'Lineker would have got that!'.
The fact he was tapped up by us shows how dominant we were at the time and how respected we were as a club, every other club was after him, and he chose us.
Winning the league the next season seemed to vindicate the deal, and then signing 2.2 Tony seemed to hide any anxiety's, only for the true blue way of having a midget centre forward and hoofing the ball skywards crept back in.

One thing about Lineker, it was the last time we actually played to a forwards strengths, even when we had the big Yin we did little in the way of service to him, edge of the box instead of 6 yard box.

Never mind, it's all about being a blue I suppose, but I am struggling to remind myself why at the moment. memories like these tend to help.

Juan is correct, we always played to his strengths, very direct with him.

Many people were suprised we never won anything that year, but the injury to Big Nev seriously hampered our double winning season that year.

Really? I thought he was negotiating with Barca all through the summer - to think I've held a grudge for all these years hiding Obviously I was young and green and trusted the board ....

Inchy touched him up in the shower.

The other one was being something surroninding Kendall and his drinking

I genuinley dont think he shat on us, all the abuse he gets and he still comes across as he genuinely loves Everton.

He is still an Evertonian, a mate of mine saw him in north wales and his 2 kids had Everton kits on. I think all the shit he got was unfair too.

I dont think he did the dirty on us either, and I've always admired the way he's never (to my knowledge) slagged us off

I'm going with the Kendall angle. I was guest at the club when Reidy was manager of Man City and we had a few drinks after ... all I can say was Kendall (much as I respect his achievements for the club) was a horrible man, a drunken letch and I wouldnt be at all surprised if that had some bearing on Speed's exit

I've met HK many times and yet to meet him sober. I met Reidy once in the players lounge after we played Coventry 2-2 I think, a really sound dude who kep going on about Cyrille Regis being like an ox !!

Agree Ms M , can't recall Speed slating anything Everton, and fair play to him for that.

I think he will return to the club one day in some sort of coaching capacity. I think he would have alot to offer as a coach.

Reidy was fab - remember the documentary when he was in charge of Sunderland? The man's a star!

At the match I spoke about before I more or less had to answer Kendall back and I was shaking like a leaf afterwards. I always remember Reidy saying to me 'You can say what you want, youre a ST holder, you OWN this club'

Good man smile

I had a pair of them, one of my legendary but infrequent sprints down the wing saw me crying due to some serious chaffing omg . Haven't walked properly since, took them to Spain and not advisable to go swimming in either, quite transluscent when wet, scared too many kids and frightened off the ladies crybaby

Not as bad as ironing my semi plasticy nylon 1971 Everton away shorts and leaving most of them stuck to the iron wanker
